About Aotea Roadies

Kia ora! We're Brian and Zana and we’d love you to join us on one of the many tours Aotea Roadies offer.

Aotea Roadies born from a love of travel

Our love of exploring began with the classic Kiwi road trips which we enjoyed with our parents as kids, most often involving beaches, camping, barbecues and lots of rugged outdoor fun. In more recent years, weekends and holidays would see us and our dog heading for the hills in our modified truck which you may be forgiven for mistaking for an unusual looking horse float!

As do all good kiwis, we love to travel and to experience the rest of the world. Each international adventure reminds us even more of how lucky we are to live in a land so diverse in landscapes, experiences, people and cultures, and has inspired us to share our spectacular little corner of the planet with others from all over the world through ‘Aotea Roadies’.

We look forward to meeting you soon!

our transport

The Roadie Mobile – aka The artwork on wheels
Our trusty original 12 seater wagon seats 8 travellers comfortably or up to 10 who don’t mind a cosy ride. We keep the Roadie Wagon spotlessly clean and tidy and she never fails to impress us with her handling of even the gnarliest kiwi back roads.  The Roadie Wagon features voice activated natural air con and comes with a front seat assistant to open the sliding door at each scheduled stop.

The Gangsta Wagon (Toyota Alphard)
A more modest, less conspicuous but very spacious and comfortable ride seating up to 6 travellers comfortably (or 7 if you don’t mind 3 in the back seat). The gangsta wagon comes with all the bells and whistles including air conditioning, automatic door opening systems and good all-round visibility for great sight seeing.

The luggage trailer
For the overnighters and big days out we have the custom designed Roadie luggage trailer with an in-built barbecue. Also great for taking all the toys on holiday – bikes, fishing rods, skis, boogie boards, surf boards…..

Our Kai (aka 'Food' on tour)

We really love food and we’ve become famous in NZ for our home-baked Aotea Roadies morning tea roadside picnic - (aka smoko break). Almost all of our tours include morning tea with the exception of the 2 hour city highlights tour due to time constraints.

Equally as good is our scrummy kiwi style barbecue optional on our Wild West tour - weather permitting. A barbecue can be incorporated into almost any full day or overnight tour - just check availability with us at time of booking. Food allergy avoidance, vegetarian and vegan options all available on request.

Our rough and ready tours also include a barbie - well perhaps more of a good old kiwi sausage sizzle complete with bread and coleslaw - and of course plenty of Watties tomato sauce!

Accommodation is selected based on the best option for our group on tour which may be anything from a multi-room classic kiwi style bach to a room for 2 in a very nice hotel. Beachie roadies are likely to see us shacking up in a kiwi bach style accommodation within a few minutes walk of the beach, while when in the wine country we may search out a classic country villa or B&B for a more boutique experience.

If our accommodation selection is not exactly what you are looking for, we are happy to search for a more suitable alternative.  Additional costs may apply.

Environmental Initiatives

It’s no secret that all those of us lucky enough to call New Zealand home are blessed with amazing natural treasures including rugged mountain ranges and lush forests, dramatic coastlines, lakes and rivers. These taonga are under threat from introduced species and commercial activities and must be actively protected and preserved for future generations.

Within all of our activities we consider the effect on the environment and whenever possible minimise non-recyclable waste, optimise vehicle performance to reduce emissions and manage cleaning practices to minimise release of chemicals into waterways. We promote the use of public transport whenever possible to complement our tours therefore reducing our on road time and emissions (eg. Southern Secrets – come to us!)

We encourage our visitors to help us protect our environment by not littering or removing vegetation and refraining from smoking, and we always carry a rubbish bag to pick up litter during our walks.

Volunteer pest Control in the Hunua Ranges

Zana regularly participates in the pest control activities undertaken by passionate and hard core teams of volunteers in the Hunua Ranges to reduce introduced predators which include rats, possums, stoats and ferrets. The primary objective is to protect the endangered native bird the ‘Kokako’ which has now successfully been re-established in targeted areas of the Hunua Ranges largely as a result of the efforts of the dedicated volunteers. The health of the forest in general has benefitted greatly from the work carried out by these keen conservationists as the regeneration of lush forest is less hindered by the voracious apetite of furry little eco-terrorists.
