Wild West and Beyond
An action packed overnight road trip which takes in the best of the Auckland’s North West and North East coasts. Highlights include the stunning Waitakere Ranges, West Auckland vineyards, wild West coast beaches, mountain biking and other optional activities, historic Helensville and Parakai hot springs, farmers market, Goat Island marine reserve, lots of local food, wine, iconic pubs, and of course exceptional Kiwi hospitality.
As we depart Auckland city, we’ll give you a glimpse of a few of the scenic highlights as we ascend into the clouds of Scenic Drive heading towards Aucklands wild west coast. As the name suggests, this meandering road provides numerous photo opportunities and the opportunity to experience the grandeur of our own sub tropical rainforest — the stunning Waitakere Ranges.
The prestigious Arataki visitor centre nestled into the stunning native landscape is our first port of call. Here the history of the Waitakere forest region is detailed in an array of medias.
After a classic morning tea prepared by our multi-talented crew, we descend towards the West Coast where there is ample opportunity to try some excellent wines at our West Auckland vineyards and enjoy a classic kiwi style barbeque.
After lunch, we visit the rugged West coast black sand beach of Muriwai. We have a rare opportunity to view the gannet colony between the months of August and March.
Mid afternoon offers a range of activity options to choose from which include mountain biking and horse riding in the Woodhill Forest. For those preferring a more relaxing experience, there is opportunity for more wine tasting or perhaps a long stroll down the black sand beach at Muriwai.
Our final destination on day 1 is the historic Kaipara township of Helensville with a selection of cafes and restaurants. Our quaint boutique accommodation is in the heart of town and transfers to the nearby Parakai hot pools are included from our accommodation; the perfect way to relax after an action packed day.
We start with a hearty kiwi style brekky, then traverse a less well travelled route through the scenic hills and valleys dividing the West and East coast heading for the country town of Matakana, famous for art, wine, coffee and other delicious essentials.
A wander around the bustling Matakana farmers market is non-negotiable before we continue to Goat Island marine reserve which offers marine experiences for all adventure levels ranging from snorkelling and scuba diving, to kayaking or a glass bottom boat cruise. In the event that Goat Island marine conditions are less than ideal we will instead explore the other stunning beaches, vineyards and art spots which are numerous in this area.
Our scenic afternoon return journey to Auckland City allows several opportunities to sample local produce and experience the rugged charm of the historic Puhoi pub or the tasty gourmet delights of the renowned Puhoi Cheese Factory cafe.
To conclude our overnight city escape, we will return you to your point of pick up in the early evening.
