At the Southern reaches of the Auckland region lies a rugged sprawling forest with dramatic waterfalls and picturesque native trees and wildlife. Let us take you on a ramble through forest, vineyards, country villages and beaches with lots of opportunities to enjoy the scenic and gastronomic delights along the way. On our return journey we stop for a stroll through the Auckland Botanic Gardens.
We head South on State Highway 1 before passing through the Southern suburbs and ascending the surrounding rural hills on our way to the Hunua Range — the largest block of forest to be found on the mainland of the Auckland region.
Our first pause at the majestic Hunua Falls is certain to refresh the senses, especially for those free spirits who feel the urge for a quick dip in the frothing waters at the base of the falls. We take a look at one of the several impressive regional water catchment dams located throughout the forest. A few minutes down the road we enjoy a wine tasting or coffee and a bite to eat at a local vineyard perched amongst the rural hills.
Continuing our country ramble we soon find ourselves in Clevedon village well known for the crafts and delicious local specialties. For the oyster connoisseurs, a visit to the local Oyster farm is a must. From Clevedon we head to the coast via a narrow winding Pohutukawa coast road overhung with our native Christmas tree. We stop at a popular seaside village with the opportunity for a swim and a hokey pokey ice cream.
Departing the coast we meander through rolling hills to the beautiful Auckland Botanic Gardens for a short leisurely stroll and then if time allows we will detour via the beautiful Cornwall Park and ascend One Tree Hill for a breathtaking view of the city before returning you to your accommodation.
*Local vineyard is open from Thursday to Sunday only. Monday to Wednesday we visit an alternative award winning vineyard.
